We began as a micro-bakery called MMH Provisions where we made fresh baked breads of all kinds. We met our best friend and business partner at one of the farmer’s markets we sold bread at, and she approached us asking us to make her some Cuban bread because she missed having fresh Cuban bread from Miami. As we were baking it, Miriam realized that it smelled just like the fresh baked bread she grew up eating during her summers in Brasil, so that began a deep dive into the culinary backgrounds of both countries and we found so many similarities! This evolved into the three of us dreaming up a sandwich shop with a full bar that became Yuma! In November 2023, we began doing pop-ups at farmers markets, bars, and festivals around Houston, and after a few years, we decided that a brick and mortar was rapidly in our future. We opened at 4219 Washington Ave (the former Ninja Ramen spot) in June 2026!
We never imagined bringing Cuban and Brazilian cooking together would be our future, but the two cuisines have combined so organically. Miriam brings her Brazilian heritage to the forefront in ways Houston hasn’t seen yet. Steering clear of the traditional churrascaria inspiration, Miriam brings lesser known dishes that Brazilians eat everyday in sandwich form. Imagine comfort classics turned into a sandwich but for Brazilians! We at Yuma believe there’s nothing more accessible and comforting than a sandwich. Besides Miriam’s Brazilian heritage, we’ve also woven in an ode to Houston’s diverse culinary scene. Rooted in heritage & a friendship between a Brazilian and a Cuban, we’ve created a love letter to our upbringings abroad and in Houston.
