It all started back home in Chiapas, Mexico, where husband and wife, Francisco and Sofia have been cooking their entire lives. They moved to the U.S. in 1999, and have been working in restaurants since. In 2021 they came up with the idea to sell their homemade food on the corner of 4th and Don Julian on Saturdays in Avocado Heights. They wanted to serve the people in La Puente something different and share the homemade food they grew up with – food that’s been in their family for generations. Remarkably, they would be completely sold out within just two hours. With more than two decades of experience in the restaurant and hospitality industry, the Reyes family boldly embarked on their own culinary journey, and opened their unique establishment in 2022. La Cocina de Los Reyes invites you to a culinary exploration of Chiapas, a lesser-known but gastronomically diverse state in Mexico. Nestled in the southern borders of Mexico, Chiapas draws inspiration from its neighbors – Guatemala and Oaxaca, resulting in a unique blend of flavors that sets it apart from the usual Mexican fare found in LA. At our Latino and family-owned and operated small restaurant, We offer everything from tamales made with chipilin leaves (a culinary practice unique to chiapas and preserved from our indigenous ancestors) to barbacoa Chiapaneca (slow cooked beef, with plantain and avocado leaves, seasoned with chile, guajillo, and more). If you want something comforting, be sure to try our Caldo de pollo Chiapaneco, nourishing chicken broth with fresh chicken on the bone and seafood. Or our Caldo Chipilin which is a hearty broth, balls of fresh corn, and zucchini. You can also try our Empanadas Chiapanecas (fried with choice of meat and homemade sauce, repollo, queso seco). We have 100% Chiapaneca beverages like our refreshing pozol de cacao, Tascalate and aguas frescas. We also have popular Mexican dishes like tacos, burritos, quesadillas, and tortas. If you don’t want to leave the comfort of your home, you can still try everything that is typical in chiapas by ordering online!
