The Ultimate Taco Trail in Houston

Where are the Best Tacos in Houston? ¿Cuáles son los mejores tacos en Houston?

Here’s the deal. Everyone claims to know the best taco places in their city, and even more in Texas. We know it’s hard to pick or claim the best. That’s why we’re sharing some of our favorite taco spots and why they’re worth a visit.

Houston, Texas, is home to the fourth-largest Hispanic population in the United States, with 2.8 million people. ¡Wow es muchísima gente, y hambrienta! Because of Houston’s large Hispanic population, it makes sense that the city boasts some of the country’s best Latin food. And while you can find tasty dishes from various Latin American countries here, there’s a special place in Houstonians’ hearts for tacos.

Seamos realistas, a todos nos encanta un buen taco.

Keep reading for the downlow on some our favorite taco spots in Houston.

Space City Birria Tacos serves authentic Mexican cuisine in downtown Houston. This is a great spot to visit if you work in the area and are looking to spice up your lunch-hour options!

As indicated by their name, one of their specialties is the Birria taco. Ufff ya se me antojó.

What are Birria tacos?

The dish starts with Birria, a spicy and savory stew made with beef or goat. To make tacos, the meat is added to a tortilla, and cheese is sprinkled on top. Then, the entire thing is dipped in the stew and fried. ¿Tienes hambre? Nosotros también.

The result is a crispy, cheesy, and savory dish that will make you rethink the way you prepare and eat tacos. You also get a cup consome on the side for dipping. Otra forma de ver el mundo taquero.

If you go to Space City Birria Tacos and More, you must order the restaurant’s signature dish, Birria Tacos. We guarantee you won’t be disappointed!

The next time you go, you can branch out and try some other menu items like street tacos, quesadillas, tortas, and even burgers. Está bien, te perdonamos por no escoger birria jaja.

When most people think about Texas, they think about barbecue. Henderson & Kane General Store has got your barbecue craving covered with brisket, sausage, pulled pork, and pork ribs!

However, if you’re in the mood for Mexican food, the General Store also delivers a variety of tasty tacos (plus chips and salsa, queso, or guacamole). That way, you don’t have to choose and can enjoy the best of both worlds.

Pensemos, BBQ fusión con mexicano, la verdad suena muy muy bien.

Head to Henderson & Kane on Taco Tuesday to try their delicious tacos stuffed with freshly smoked meat. You can choose from chicken, brisket, and pork, but the brisket tacos are the ones we find ourselves ordering again and again.

La verdad queremos todo del menú.

Need to do some errands after your taco run? You can probably get at least some of them done at Henderson & Kane.

Henderson & Kane features something for everyone. In addition to a full restaurant menu, they also sell a variety of local goods, including produce, beverages, pantry goods, and eggs, with wine and beer coming soon. ¡Qué!

A little fun fact? They proudly sell items from some of Houston’s most well-known chefs, farmers, ranchers, and makers, supporting local businesses as well!

For those who love an authentic Mexican street taco, Tacos Doña Lena will satisfy your craving. Un taco clásico.

This restaurant is one of Houston’s most popular Mexican spots, and its success is all due to Doña Lena herself.

Aquí la historia de Doña Lena – She started selling tacos in 1985 in her hometown, Salamanca, Guanajuato, Mexico. After moving to the U.S. in the 1990s, she continued running a taco business from her home.

Eventually, in 2020, she opened her own restaurant, which is now a three-time winner of the OutSmart Magazine’s Best Mexican Restaurant award and named among Yelp’s top 100 restaurants to visit in the United States

At Tacos Doña Lena, you can get creative and construct the street taco of your choice. Como dicen, aquí no hay dieta!

First, you’ll choose your “antojito” (“little cravings,” which is how Mexican street vendors describe their food). In addition to tacos, you can order quesadillas, gorditas, tortas, and more.

Customers can choose from 13 different meat/fish/poultry options and three different meatless ones. We suggest sampling the barbacoa and carne asada tacos or the lengua (tongue) if you’re feeling adventurous (we promise, it’s fantastic). Delicioso.

Taqueria La Perla de Jalisco describes its food as follows: “Producto de calidad, fresco, y las manos honestas de un cocinero.”

Translation: “Quality, fresh product, and the honest hands of a cook.”

It doesn’t get much more straightforward than that, does it? If you love simple and delicious Mexican food, Taqueria La Perla de Jalisco is the place to go. Auténtico.

In addition to serving some of our top tacos in Houston, they also host regular karaoke nights, making the restaurant the perfect place to stop on a night out with friends.

Which tacos should you order when you visit Taqueria La Perla de Jalisco?

We love the fish and shrimp tacos, both of which are perfect for seafood lovers. For those looking for a plant-based option, we also recommend checking out the nopales (cactus) tacos. Nopales are a very common Mexican vegetable and come in a fresh salad arrangement, they’re so tasty that even carnivores will enjoy them! No te arrepentirás!

¿Y de tomar?

Whatever taco you choose, you should also order one of the restaurant’s margaritas, which are always made with agave nectar and freshly squeezed juice, to sip alongside it. ¿Y a quién no le gusta una margarita? ¡Están buenísimas!

Los Mendoza Mexican Restaurant invites customers to “Ven a comer como en casa” (“Come eat like at home”). They promise fresh food and authentic flavors that will remind you of your abuela’s cooking! La verdad nuestras abuelas si cocinaban deli…

If you want to enjoy authentic Birria tacos, you must stop by Los Mendoza. They serve beef and goat Birria, and we think you should try both to see which one you like best.

Don’t let the idea of eating goat scare you — the team at Los Mendoza knows what they’re doing. Delicioso y sabor auténtico.

Early risers can also enjoy breakfast tacos made with their choice of ham, bacon, chorizo, or potatoes (and prepared with handmade corn or flour tortillas). Mmm ¡nada como un desayunito mexicano!

Los Mendoza also serves delicious golden chicken tacos served with consommé, a clear soup made with stock or broth. If you’re not in the mood for Birria, you won’t be disappointed with these tasty chicken tacos.

This restaurant should definitely have a place on your list of taco trail destinations. ¡No te lo puedes perder!

It doesn’t matter if you want tacos for breakfast, lunch, or both. The team members at Chilosos are there for you.

Chilosos Taco House has two locations, one in The Heights and one in Cypress. Each location has its own exclusive menu. Y así ubicaciones cercanas para todos los que tienen antojo.

If you live in The Heights area, we know there are a lot of great restaurants, but you can’t miss out on trying Chilosos.

The lunch menu at Chilosos in The Heights offers a selection of Gloria’s Tacos made with beef, pork, or chicken.

We’ve tried and loved all of these lunch tacos. However, our personal favorites are the breakfast tacos.

La verdad, ¡nos encanta la variedad que ofrecen!

Chilosos’ breakfast tacos are made with several combinations of beans, eggs, sausage, bacon, and potatoes. With so many different combinations, everyone joining you on the taco trail can find something they like to start their day on the right foot.

Guests can also enjoy enchiladas, fajitas, and other tasty options if they’re not in the mood for tacos (although, let’s be honest, who wouldn’t be in the mood for tacos?). Pero pues te puedes pedir los dos también, si tienes mucha hambre…

Chilosos Taco House is a staple in the Houston area for many taco lovers. Whether you want tacos for breakfast, lunch, or both, the team members at Chilosos are there for you. ¡Para la lista!

Surprise Pasadena residents! We have a great option for you!

Tacos Del Julio has locations in Houston and Pasadena. We love them both, ¡y así tenemos más opciones para ir cuando estamos en diferentes zonas!

If you want to experience a “true taste of Mexico,” this is where you go. También si extrañas el sabor de México, disfrutarás estos tacos.

The owners are committed to consistency with their flavors, so you can trust that you’ll always get a delicious meal whenever you go.

At Tacos Del Julio, you can choose from several specialty taco recipes, including the Monterey 400 (seasoned beef topped with cheese and avocado). However, our go-to menu item is the Tlaquepaque Tacos, which features five flavorful barbacoa tacos on corn tortillas.

We think Tacos Del Julio has certainly earned its spot on the Ultimate Taco Trail, especially if you’re looking for incredible quality and quantity (five tacos for $12 — where else can you get that kind of deal?).

A súper precio, la verdad.

Tres offers a unique blend of Mexican and Arabic cuisine. That’s right — most people don’t think of these two food types working well together, but Tres is here to prove them wrong. ¡Y están deliciosos!

Many people also don’t realize the influence of Arabic food on Spanish and Mexican dishes. For example, several spices that are staples in Mexican food originated in the Middle East. The roasted meat served in tacos al pastor is similar to the roasted meat served in shawarma. ¿No sabías? Es un dato curioso jaja!

Guests at Tres can choose from a wide range of Arabic-Mexican fusion dishes, including tacos.

We recommend the Falafel Taco, which is made with a flour tortilla, fried falafel, and a mix of tahini and hummus topped with cucumbers, tomatoes, and cilantro. It provides the perfect blend of Latin and Middle Eastern flavors. Ufff ya queremos todos!

If you don’t want a plant-based meal, the street tacos made with either chicken shawarma or ribeye are a close second and also worth sampling.

Somos fan de la comida fusión, ¿y tú lo eres?

Fried Birria tacos and street tacos made with either chicken shawarma and garlic aioli or ribeye are also available.

Tres should undoubtedly be included on your must-visit list. ¿Qué esperas?
